Kafka on the Shore is my first Murakami read and the surreal writing of the book surpasses all I have ever read. The book narrates the metaphysical stories of a 15-year old runaway, Kafka Tamura and a “not so bright” childhood tragedy inflicted old man, Nakata. The stories run parallel and yet cut across each other.

As the alternate chapters pick up their journey through life and its ordeals, you will come across speaking cats, raining eels and all sorts of bizarre things leaving you awestruck in some alternate undiscovered world.

The plot stands loyal to its genre of Magical Realism because, beyond a certain unknown point in the novel, the weirdness of the novel actually defines its beauty. It is a magical compilation of things that will leave you enchanted beyond measure.

To make you feel through his words, to feel things that hit you someplace deep real hard, to lend you a much-needed inconvenience while you still lie in your comfort zone is what defines the strong writing of this novel.

It seems as if you are in a dream, a long dream where nothing makes sense and yet, there is an unsaid desire to stay there forever. Quoting from this very novel- “Slowly, like a film fades out, the real world evaporates. I am alone inside the world of the story. My favourite feeling in the world.”

I wouldn’t be wrong if I say that the book is a complete mess, but a beautiful mess (lose yourself in it to regain yourself) is what would be a refined description.

The book has unanswered questions left to your imagination but it couldn’t be any more complete in every sense.

If you are in for a magical ride through the themes of love, compassion, human relations, self- reflection, pain, adventure, and recovery, then this has to be on your TBR list. And remember that you will probably not be content in a single reading!
